How to Read OTDR Traces & Avoid Common Fiber Testing Mistakes

When it comes to fiber optic network maintenance, OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing is one of the most crucial tools in a technician’s arsenal. One of the most discussed topics in fiber forums is interpreting OTDR traces accurately—and for good reason.

An OTDR trace provides a visual map of the fiber link, showing events like splices, connectors, and faults. Misinterpreting this data can lead to unnecessary repairs or overlooked issues. That’s why understanding event maps, marker placement, and dead zones is essential.

Another key topic is the use of launch cables to eliminate blind spots at the beginning of a fiber run. Without them, even a perfect splice might appear as a loss, confusing technicians.

Most users also emphasize the importance of clean connectors and the right test wavelengths (1310nm and 1550nm). Inconsistent loss readings often stem from dirty ports or inappropriate test settings.

Finally, selecting the right budget-friendly OTDR or cable tester is a hot topic. While high-end models are ideal, many field users rely on portable, rugged testers that deliver accurate readings under harsh conditions.
